What is going on with Fandom these days?  I swear it’s like watching Team Jacob and Team what’s-his-butt duke it out over fan superiority.  You see the words “True Fan” being spouted off by kids who are probably too young to even get what the term once was.

I mean one minute we had 3 movies, then 6, then 9, then some tv shows.  And along the way Star Wars- both Expanded Universe and George’s “Vision” – have been evolving.

Some self described “True Fans” would say the titles for those who only liked the Original Trilogy, or only Georges “vision”  Call them the “Visionaries” or the “Movie Purest”  and even though not every fan fits into one of these lame new “LABELS” it continues.  You have your “EU fanatics” Your “Obsessed Fanboys” those who would rather George get his hands out of the box – these ones get the “Hater” label a LOT I notice.

You have the “Mando’ade” and the “Clone Wars elite”.  Who are at war over the “real story” behind the Mandalorians.

I mean in a Galaxy that should have room for everything it’s as at war as it’s title amongst fans.  Fandom is almost at a civil war!

Ok so a CIVIL WAR in Fandom is highly unlikely since most fans can’t agree about anything.  Oh sure we can agree about plenty, but at the core- each fan has their own outlook on what it should have been.

Take Jar Jar.

No Seriously TAKE HIM!!

I am one of those fans who would love to see Jar Jar get deleted from the saga.  And yet others love him.  From an author stand point Karen Traviss’s Star Wars works are a lot like Jar Jar- you either LOVE them, HATE them, or like them only so far.

Which is funny- since Karen is the one who’s recent contributions have made the fandom divides more etched out.  Then there is the recent “True Fans” statements about the Mandalorians, which would be safer to say a “True EU Fan” since the Mandalorians have factored as a MAJOR element only in the EU, the movies and tv shows have left the Mandalorians a small thing.

Is it not loving Star Wars in ANY form that makes you a True Fan?  Heck I’d say a TRUE FAN is a person not afraid to admit their love for a fictional universe in public, or were Star Wars t-shirts almost daily, or have a Star Wars Book in their hand everyday.

I mean what are we using as the basis here?  Are my kids Frakked from being “True Fans” because of when they were born?

“Sorry kid, you were born after the tv shows” or “Aren’t you a little young to remember drive ins??”

I mean we have enough things going on here- you’ve got different ends of a timeline where all sorts of events range depending on the era one lived, beyond that you have the whole vision thing- whose vision of Star Wars do you enjoy most?  What characters do you most enjoy?

I say lets focus on the things that are cool.  Oh wait can’t do that either cause we ALL can’t agree.  Can we?

Quick show of hands: Who liked Darth Maul?  Who hated him?

See even there- someone hates him.

So lets just keep the label simple- do you like Star Wars or don’t you?
No more drawing lines, you either take the good with the bad for better or worse or you don’t.

I’m sick of division in Fandom, I read Star Wars to escape political bs not to walk into more labels.  I thought Uber-Geek was the last title I’d have beyond Jedi.

I mean call yourself a ‘True Fan’ all day long, that’s fine, just don’t say someone else isn’t one because their outlook on Star Wars differs then yours.  To each their own.

Well I’m done ranting about this: May the Force be with us, for we’re already making things interesting…..

Alright readers and would be followers!  Time to step up to the button!  Your Mand’alor is calling it is time to “Click” “I will follow you IR2” and follow me into battle! (A.K.A. subscribe to this Star Wars RSS feed!)

Heed the call!

Wow, all these crazy tie ins, I’m just floored!  First we have Starkiller officially a clone, followed by crazy site challenges and fun clues.  We had the epic trailer for The Old Republic MMO, Deceived.  Then came the Fatal Alliance and Deceived novel tie in announcements.  Webcomics coming to print, new worlds to explore and familiar ones with a new spin!

What does it all mean?  Well it seems clear that with the Star Wars: Legacy comic series ending and with it closing that end of the Era for now, the Star Wars Saga is delving into the past!  That’s right!  When you couple these projects with the Knights Errant comic series and Novel tie in by John Jackson Miller, the past is about to be blown wide open!

Look forward to Mandalorian pawns, Sith Lords, and Jedi on the defense, as well as epic battles both in space and with lightsabers and Force mastery!  The Light and the Dark collide in a struggle for the Galaxy, one to free it the other to control it!

Sorry, I’m just in shock- somehow I must get a new PC to play this epic Star Wars game… drat!  Then there is the next gen console, or I guess I could just go PC and play The Force Unleashed 2 on the PC as well.  So many options, all requiring plenty of money.  But dang if it doesn’t look like a spectacular story!  Look forward to The Force Unleashed 2, this fall, and TOR the MMO by next year.

And as always, May the Force be with you…

Stay on target….

Who’s going to Disneyland?  Well rumor has it we are.  And what do my never been to Disney eyes should appear?  But a tiny Jedi Mickey and an R2 unit to spare!  Yeah I think I found the souvenir I want to get me and the kids!

Here’s the announcement from Disney:

“The creative “Forces” at Disney and Lucasfilm are proud to announce an all-new character coming to the Disney Parks in April 2010. Every Jedi needs his own astromech droid, and Jedi Mickey is no exception. This spring we will be introducing Jedi Mickey’s own droid, R2-MK.

“This new character is exclusive to the Disney Parks, and he will be available at both Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California. It will come packed as a Hasbro action figure 2-pack along with Jedi Mickey and will retail for $18.95.”

Be ready for updates from the Jedi Academy as well, the kids will surely be enrolled in the Padawan and Youngling classes!

DemagolKnights of the Old Republic comic fans rejoice!!!  Straight from John Jackson Millers Blog Faraway Looks we discover that more of the Kotor saga will be revealed soon as a StarWars.Com Hyperspace exclusive!

I have a third piece of Knights of the Old Republic-era fiction coming to the Star Wars fan club site, Hyperspace. Tentative title: The Journal of Doctor Demagol.

This is something I had considered doing for a long time, potentially as a back-up feature for whatever issue of
KOTOR wound up having Demagol’s origin story. I’d always wanted to tell a story looking at the series from his point of view — getting into what was going on in the twisted mind inside the helmet. As it turned out, we ended up doing the origin story in #48, where we also had the Mass Effect Redemption preview and my short essay. But the longer-form piece was still bubbling in my mind, and I’m glad we’ve found a place for it. It’s a nice little coda to the comics series, and it was loads of fun to write. I don’t know when it’s scheduled to appear yet, but keep an eye on StarWars.com!

What?! A new Star Wars comic line coming this summer?  Yes, straight out of issue #116 of Star Wars Insider, and the words of Daniel Wallace, and John Jackson Miller, Star Wars: Knight Errant.  Before any cries of foul at the title, let me point out that the recent Star Wars Insider had the wrong title!  They mentioned that the title was still the Star Wars: Jedi working title which is an error.  Confirmation came from John Jackson Miller at the Dark Horse boards that Knight Errant is the correct title and that Jedi was dropped.  Though the Jedi title wouldn’t have really worked since they already had a series with the same Jedi title, with independent one-shots set during the Clone Wars.

This project is also the same crossover series replacing Kotor in the comic line up, that we heard about a while back going by the name Knight Errant.  The comic series will kick off this summer, and John Jackson Miller’s first full star wars novel will follow in 2011, also titled Knight Errant, and will deal with certain characters from the comic series.

Knight Errant the comic series will be an ongoing comic series, and word is that if you felt Star Wars: Dark Times was a stroll down misery lane kind of comic series, get ready for the previously unexplored Dark Ages of the Republic (DAotR)

IR2 Review: Crosscurent

Paul S. Kemp’s Crosscurrent is now behind me, a great Star Wars Paperback story I’m here to say!  Past meets Present to fight for the fate of the future!

Did any of you play a little game back in 03 called Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy?  You have?! Well then you know Jaden Korr! (The rest of you check out the links to the Wook I’ve provided)

I will try to keep the spoilers to a minimum for those who still plan on reading Crosscurrent!

That’s right Fanboys and Girls this standalone turned doulogy has Kyle Katarn’s lovable Padawan now a Jedi Knight, Jaden Korr as the center character!  Jaden is plagued with doubt over his recent actions in the Second Civil War, on Centerpoint Station.  On Coruscant Jaden isolates himself from everyone in his apartment, until he has a Force vision which sets him on his path to a world named Fhost.

Jaden is shown to be a character who is still trying to understand his place in the Force, and how to perceive it’s sides.  Jaden like Jacen Solo before him, to be conflicted by his recent actions, and what it means to be a Jedi.  I loved how this was explored through out the novel!
He often contemplates his Master Katarn’s teachings:

The Force is a tool, Jaden. Sometimes a weapon, sometimes a salve. Dark Side, Light Side, these are distinctions of insignificant difference. Do not fall into the trap of classification. Sentience curses us with a desire to categorize and draw lines, to fear that after this be dragons. But that is illusion. After this is not dragons but more knowledge, deeper understanding. Be at peace with that.” -Kyle Katarn

The IR2 Review: Abyss

Troy Denning’s first installment in the Fate of the Jedi series Abyss is the third book of the FotJ series so far, following Aaron Alston’s Outcast and then Christie Golden’s Omen.

Jedi are going mad, Luke Skywalker is in exile, former imperial Admiral Natasi Daala is the Chief of State of the Galactic Alliance; this is the reality that Abyss opens with.

Two more Jedi have fallen. The recent event this time was not one but TWO Jedi Knights, one right after the next.

As the Order struggles to discover what is affecting the young Jedi who were hiding in the Maw during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. Continue reading
